Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably reduce the amt. of a basic slag making material used in a steel making process in a converter or the like and the amt. of slag formed, by previously desiliconizing hot iron with iron oxide, etc. prior to oxidation refining to steel in a converter or the like.
CONSTITUTION: Hot iron manufactured in a blast furnace is first desulfurized outside the furnace. Next to the iron is added solid iron oxide of total Fe content above 60%, e.g. mill scale or sintered ore. In case the trivalent Fe content of the solid oxide is below 0.5% and above 5%, the solid oxide is supplied at a rate of 3W10 kg/min and 1W7 kg/min to 1 ton of hot iron, respectively, whereby Si in the hot iron is preferentially oxidized and removed as slag. The hot iron thus desiliconized to low Si content is then oxidized by oxygen blowing in a converter to be refined to steel by decarburization and dephosphorization. Since very little SiO2 is formed, the amt. of CaO to be added as a slag making material is considerably reduced and formation of slag is inevitably minimized.
