Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily produce a low carbon stainless steel by taking the molten stainless steel having been decarburized down to a constant carbon amount in an arc furnace into a ladle provided with porous plugs, blowing mixed gases of O2 and Ar and charging a reducing agent.
CONSTITUTION: The molten stainless steel having been decarburized and refined down to 0.20W0.25% C in an arc furnace is put into a ladle 1 provided with a plurality of porous plugs 2 in the bottom. Mixed gases of O2 and Ar mixed at ratios of O2/Ar=0.15W1 are blown through the pipes 3 connected to these porous plugs 2 at rates of 0.25W1.0Nm3/ton.min, whereby the molten metal is refined down to about <0.01% C owing to the decrease in the partial pressure of the CO gas formed by the decarburization of the contained carbon by O2 and the decarburization by Ar, without oxidizing Cr so much. The Cr which has been oxidized and entered slag 6 as Cr2O3 is reduced to Cr by adding a reducing agent such as Ca-Si or Fe-Si from an adding device 6, thence the Cr is returned into the molten metal 7.
