Abstract

PURPOSE: The DL-isomer of the titled compound containing an excessive amount of the desired optical isomer is dissolved in a solvent and crystallized out by adding sulfuric acid to produce an optical active isomer used as an optical resolution reagent for racemic acids in high purity and high yield.
CONSTITUTION: DL-1-Phenyl-2-(p-tolyl)ethylamine of the formula containing an excessive amount of a desired optically active isomer is dissolved in an alcohol, acetone, or a mixture thereof with water. Then, sulfuric acid is added to the solution to precipitate the sulfate of the desired optically active isomer and the precipitate is separated. The resultant optical active isomer is widely used as a resolution reagent for chrysanthemumic acid.
