Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high water content porous gel having mechanical strength by a method wherein the high watercontent gel containing polyvinyl alcohol and a clay mineral is molded and, after freezing, dried under vacuum.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous suspension containing five wt. times or less of a laminate structural type clay mineral comprising a three-layer type composite layer as a basic unit is added to polyvinyl alcohol of which the saponification value is 95% or more and the viscosity average polymerization degree is 1,500 or more and the resulting mixture is molded in a container having an optional shape at first. After molding, when the obtained molded object is frozen at -6°C or less and dried under vacuum without melting the same, the high water content gel containing 20W90wt% water is obtained. This gel is porous and high in water content as well as has excellent rubber like elasticity and mechanical strength and can be prepared inexpensively.
