Abstract
PURPOSE: To immobilize a live microbial cell in a gel, by dehydrating an aqueous suspension containing polyvinyl alcohol having a specific saponification degree and a viscosity -average polymerization degree, a clay mineral of layered structure and the microbial cell to give a predetermined moisture content.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol having a saponification degree ≥95mol% and a viscosity -average polymerization degree ≥1,500 in a concentration of 1W15wt% is prepared, and a clay mineral having a layered structure containing a three-layered composite layer as a basic unit, e.g. bentonite, is added thereto. In the process, the concentration of the clay mineral in the suspension is 0.7W15wt%, and the concentration ratio (weight ratio) between the polyvinyl alcohol and the clay mineral is 1/(5W8). The suspension is then adjusted to a pH optimal for the microbial cell to be immobilized, and the microbial cell is added thereto. The resultant suspension is then dried at -6W+40°C to give a gel with a moisture content of 20W92wt% and immobilize the live microbial cell.
