Abstract
PURPOSE: To immobilize microbial cells without using reaction reagents, etc., by preparing an aqueous suspension of a clay mineral having lamellar structure and live microbial cells dispersed in an aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol having specific saponification degree and viscosity-average polymerization degree, casting the suspension in a mold, followed by freezing, forming, and drying to a definite water content.
CONSTITUTION: A clay mineral having lamellar structure consisting of a ternary composite layer as the basic unit, e.g. bentonits, is added to an aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol having a saponification degree of ≥95mol% and a viscosity-average polymerization degree of ≥1,500. The weight ratio of the clay mineral to the polyvinyl alcohol is ≤5. After adjusting the pH of the suspension to the optimum level for the microbial cells to be used, live microbial cells are added thereto, and the mixture is poured into a vessel having desired shape or into a forming mold, and frozen and formed at ≤-6°C. The formed article is dried to a dehydration ratio of ≥5wt% in vacuum without melting the article. The dried article can be reconstituted to immobilized microbial cells by immersing in water at need.
