Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a hydrophilic filler which is hard, less adsorptive and stable to microorganisms, by impregnating porous polymer beads with a vinyl ester and simultaneously polymerizing and saponifying the impregnated beads thereby to form PVA on the surfaces of the beads and within the pores.
CONSTITUTION: The hydrophilic filler is produced by (A) impregnating a macroreticular porous polymer beads obtained by polymerizing a monovinyl aromatic compound and/or a (meth)actylonitrile in the presence of a crosslinking agent, with a vinyl ester, (B) polymerizing the impregnated beads thereby to form a polyvinyl ester (C) saponifying the polyvinyl ester portion of the resulting beads to form PVA on the surfaces of the beads and within the pores thereof, and (D), if desired, introducing ion exchanging groups into the beads.
EFFECT: The filler has efficient utility in liquid chromatography columns, water treatment columns and columns for separating and purifying natural or synthetic products.
