Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a vibration-damping alloy excellent in damping capacity at low cost by a method wherein an Fe-Al alloy of specified composition is heat treated and cooled under controlled conditions to induce an order-disorder transformation in the alloy.
CONSTITUTION: An Fe-Al alloy consisting of 9W19wt% of A and the balance of Fe is heated at 1,000°C and is slowly cooled to 600°C, followed by cooling to room temperature. This treatment induces an order-disorder transformation in the alloy such that a DO3-type superlatice is formed. As a result of the transformation, an excellent damping capacity can be obtained. In addition to the use as a vibration-damping material, an effect as a soundproofing material can be expected from the alloy.
