Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture both positive and negative plates for a lead acid battery from a lead alloy strip at the same speed by means of an expansion work device. CONSTITUTION:In making positive and negative grids by expanding the right and the left half of a long strip made of a lead alloy sheet respectively, the external dimensions of the meshes of the grids are made equal. However, since the negative grid is more advantageous than the positive grid in terms of the conductivity and the corrosion resistance of a plate prepared from the grid, and the weight of the negative grid may be smaller than that of the positive grid, the arrangements of expansion-work dies and cutters for the right side and the left side of the strip are varied, and cut width (P1) of a cutter (3P) for the positive grid and cut width (P2) of a cutter (3N) for the negative grid are adjusted to satisfy the relation P1>P2. By the means mentioned above, in manufacturing both positive and negative grids, the lead alloy can be distributed to the positive and the negative side so that the ratio of the weight of the positive-side lead alloy to that of the negative-side lead alloy becomes optimum.
