Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the heat resistance and the durability of a glow plug, by forming the heating body of the glow plug of a cermet, the cermet being produced by combining ceramic particles of silicon carbide or the like with a metal powder of nickel or the like. CONSTITUTION:The glow plug comprises a protective tube 2 of a nickel-chrome- iron alloy, a conductive center shaft 4 of a mild steel housed in the tube 2, and the heating body 3 of a cermet connected to the tip of the shaft 4. Into the space between the heating body 3, the conductive center shaft 4 and the protective tube 2 is filled with an insulating material powder 5 of magnesia or the like. The heating body 3 is obtained by mixing for example 70% by weight of ceramic particles of silicon carbide or the like with, for example, 30% by weight of a metal powder of nickel or the like, molding the mixture, and then sintering it. In this case, after the sintering, its electric specific resistance is set, at for example, 100muOMEGA.cm or more.
