Abstract
PURPOSE:To discriminate the delicate change in an optical fiber by making modulated light incident thereto, receiving the backward scattered light at different scattering points, and extracting the modulating frequency component from this. CONSTITUTION:The light pulses modulated by the signal of a repetitive frequency (f) corresponding to a period sufficiently shorter than the sustaining time of the light pulses is transmitted from a transmitter T via a directional coupler DC into a long optical fiber cable OF from its one end. These light pulses generate Rayleigh scattering or scattering at discontinuous points at the other end or the like and the light pulses by the backward scattered light return to the transmission side. These are led through the coupler DC to a receiver R. In the receiver R, the component of said frequency (f) is extracted from the received light pulses and the level thereof is measured. A gate is provided to the receiver R, and when this gate is opened to receive the inputting light pulses upon lapse of a prescribed time after the transmission of the light pulses from the transmitter T, the backward scattered light from the specific scattering point is received.
