Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately measure specific gravity of an electrolyte and improve durability with a simple construction by detecting a change in an electrode current along with displacement of the float due to a change in specific gravity of the electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:When a lead wire 7 is connected with one electrode of a storage battery, a current passes through an electrode 6 in contact with an electrolyte 2 at all times and gas generated from the electrode 6 is discharged through an opening 4 formed in a tube 1. Therefore, the electrolyte inside of the tube 1 has the same level as that outside of the tube 1. If specific gravity of the electrolyte 2 is higher than the preset specific gravity of a float 8 in that state, the upper end portion of the float 8 enters into the tube 1 to form a narrowed portion 9. The current reaching the electrode 6 passes through the electrolyte 2 within the narrowed portion 9, so that the current value becomes smaller. Meanwhile, if specific gravity of the electrolyte 2 is lower than the preset specific gravity of the float 8, the upper end portion of the float 8 is lowered out of the tube 1 and the narrowed portion 9 is not formed, thus resulting in an increased current passing through the electrode 6. It is hence possible to accurately detect a change in specific gravity of the electrolyte 2 based on a change in the current passing through the electrode 6.
