Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid corrosion during the use for a long period, by providing a surface modified into high corrosion resistance on an end opposing to a recording medium for a magnetic core layer of a thin magnetic head. CONSTITUTION:On a substrate 1, a magnetic core layer 2 formed with a metallic ferromagnetic substance such as permalloy, a conductor coil layer 3, an insulation layer 4 and a protection layer 5 are constituted with known technologies. After polishing ends 6 opposing to a recording medium, a metallic thin film such as Ti, Cr or Rh is adhered by a sputtering method, heat treatment is made at 200-500 deg.C, the metal is diffused to a permalloy layer to form a surface layer 7 having the diffusion thickness of several tens-several thousands Angstrom . Or, after polishing of the said ends 6, heat treatment is made at 200-300 deg.C for several hours in air to form a corrosion-resistant oxide layer 7 of about 100Angstrom thickness. Thus, the corrosion resistance can be increased without giving adverse effect on other characteristics through the thickness of the layer 7 in the said range to achieve long life.
