PURPOSE:To improve searching sensitivity to a greater extent by a method wherein a magnet is provided in the neighborhood of both sides of a yoke core of a differential compound transformer in such a way that magnetic flux passes through the magnetic path of the core. CONSTITUTION:An Ac excitation coil 8 is wound on a central foot 7a of an E type iron core 7 and output coils 9a, 9c are wound on both feet 7b, 7c of opposite polarity, and then an I type yoke core 10 is connected to the open side of the core 7 to form a differential compound transformer 6. Magnets 11, 12 are arranged near the ends of the iron core 10 in such a way that the magnetic flux moving from one magnet 11 toward the other magnet 12 is allowed to pass through the magnetic path of the iron core 10. For this reason, when a magnetic material 4 covered with a non-magnetic material 5 approaches, part phia of the magnetic flux phiD is separated for the magnetic material 4, so that the magnetic flux flowing into the iron core 10 changes by phia.
