Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a display element with high-speed response and long life by forming a specific filmlike electrochromic layer on a display electrode. CONSTITUTION:A filmlike electrochromic material layer 41 whose primary component is a high molecular electrochromic material obtained by alternatingly copolymerizing a polymerizable electrochromic substance (Ex. 4,4'-bipyridine derivative) whose side chain has an electrochromic functional group forming/deforming colors at the application of voltage with a polymerized compound (Ex. P-aminostyrene) whose side chain has a functional group alternately is formed on a display electrode 2 attached to a base plate 1. The base plate 1 is opposed against a base plate 1 attaching an opposed electrode 3 through a spacer 5 and an electrolyte solution 42 is enclosed inside the space between base plates 1s. Since the movement of the electrochromic substance to the surface of display electrode is made unnecessary and the speed of the reaction of color forming/deforming is controlled in the process of load transfer, the process of load transfer is speed up by the electron transmission between neighboring side chains to achieve the high-speed response.
