PURPOSE:To obtain a visible image which has superior image sharpness and rich gradations, by applying an alternating electric field between a photoreceptor and a developer holder under specific conditions for jumping development. CONSTITUTION:A photoreceptor which has an electrostatic latent image and a developer carrier which carries a developing layer are placed opposingly in a development part with an opening. Between the photoreceptor and developer carrier, an external oscillating electric field with an about 10-1,000kHz low frequency which has a maximum voltage Vmax greater than a maximum voltage VD on the photoreceptor and a minimum voltage Vmin less than a minimum voltage VL on the photoreceptor is applied. At this time, the reciprocation of developer grains occurs both in an image part and a non-image part. Then, the developer is moved to the image part side in the image part or to the developer carrier side in the non-image part in one direction either by adjusting the intensity of the external electric field or by increasing the gap between the photoreceptor and developer carrier.
