Abstract

PURPOSE: To form the solidification structure of an ingot into columnar crystal and produce a high performance magnet by making the wall thickness in the central part of a mold for rare earth magnets thickner than the end parts.
CONSTITUTION: Steel and cast iron are suited for the material of the mold. The wall thickness of the mold is made thicker at the center than the end. If the temp. of the mold is low during casting, chill crystal and regular crystal are formed, and therefore it is necessary to keep the mold heated. The optimum wall thickness of the mold varies with heating conditions and the amt. of the alloy to be cast. When the mold is too thin and when it is overheated, the formation of the chill crystal decreases but the columnar crystal increases its grain sizes and the growth of the crystals is irregular. If it is too thick, the chill crystal develops too much and similarly, this results in decreased magnetic performance. An increase in the thickness of the central part by 1mm as compared to the end part leads to an increase in the columnar crystal by about 4%. Hence, it is made thicker by about ≥2mm.
