Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the gas-selecting property of a gas detecting element by using a metal oxide semiconductor containing a metal of Group VIII shown on the periodic table and a compound of the metal and by providing a glass layer containing one of the metals of the same group except the metal contained in the metal oxide semiconductor over the surface of the metal oxide semiconductor. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of SnO2 powder and platinum chloride of 0.01-1mol% is mixed with pure water, filtered, dried and calcined at 700 deg.C. A kneaded paste of the calcined powder and an organic vehicle is applied in accordance with a thick- film printing method to an insulative substrate 4 which previously is provided with an electrode 5 to form a gas-sensitive layer 6. A mixture of glass frit and 0.01- 1wt% palladium chloride is mixed with pure water, filtered and dried. Seventy parts in weight of the powdered mixture and thirty parts in weight of an organic vehicle containing one part in weight of ethyl-cellulose and ten parts in weight of beta- terpineol are mixed and kneaded to prepare a paste. The paste is applied in accordance with a thick film printing method over the gas-sensitive layer 6 to form a glass layer 7. The glass layer 7 is baked at the crystallization temperature. The gas detecting element thus formed is highly sensitive to methane gas.
