Abstract

PURPOSE: To accumulate a remarkable amount of coenzyme Q10 in microbial cells and collect coenzyme Q10, by cultivating a microorganism, belonging to the genus Flavobacterium, and having the ability to produce the coenzyme Q10 in a culture medium containing a pyridine derivative substituted at the 3-position.
CONSTITUTION: A strain, e.g. Flavobacterium capsulatum IFO-12533, belonging to the genus Flavobacterium, and having the ability to produce coenzyme Q10 is cultivated in a culture medium containing a carbon source, e.g. glucose or ethanol, a nitrogen source, e.g. ammonium sulfate or casein, potassium, iron, etc. and further a pyridine derivative substituted at the 3-position, e.g. nocotine, nicotinic acid or nicotinamide, under aerobic conditions. After the cultivation, the accumulated coenzyme Q10 is extracted by the following methods: The microbial cells are saponified, and the accumulated coenzyme Q10 is transferred to an organic solvent. The resultant coenzyme Q10 is then fractionated and purified by the chromatography, etc. to give the aimed coenzyme Q10.
