Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect relative distance between two objects without affecting motion between these two objects, by providing them with respective light- emitting devices and light-receiving devices, setting between them a graduating device optically and detecting a graduating position by the light-receiving position. CONSTITUTION:On one side A of two objects A and B which make one-dimensional relative movement, a light-emitting device 10 is provided, and on the other side B, a light-receiving device 20 is provided, and at the same time, a coordinate axis 1 is set in the direction of detecting relative distance from the light- receiving device 20, and graduating position 3a...3f are set optically toward the coordinate axis 1, and then, when the light-receiving device 20 is passing the graduating positions 3a...3f by the relative motion, modulating light fluxes 2a...2f entering the graduation positions 3a...3f are received by a light receiving device 20 and converted to electrical signals, and at the same time, graduating position in which the light-receiving device 20 is discriminated on the basis of the modulation frequency, and by doing so, a relative distance between the objects A and B is detected.
