Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain castings of good quality with less cavities by opening the upper part of cavities at the stage of packing molten metal and closing the open part just prior to the completion of packing the molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal M is poured through a socket member 9 and a sprue 8 onto a counter 6 in a sleeve 5 and a plunger 7 is fitted to the upper part of the sleeve 5, thence the sprue 8 is released and the sleeve 13 above the cavities 4 is opened as a closing member 14 is held above. After storage of the molten metal M, the plunger 7 is moved downward and when an opening 10 is opened, the molten metal M flows through a runner 11 into the cavities 4. The sleeve 13 maintains the opened state, and just prior to the completion of the packing of the molten metal M into the cavities 4, the member 14 is moved downward and is fitted into the sleeves 13 to close the upper part of the cavities 4. The member 14 moves downward further and presses the metal M coupled with the downward movement of the plunger 7. The molten metal reduced in accordance with the shrinkage by solidification is replenished by the molten metal in a cavity 12, whereby shrinkage, etc. are prevented.
