Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve ignitability and combustibility in such a way that air through an auxiliary air inlet port is spouted out along the inner wall surface of a combustion chamber, and air-to-fuel ratio in the central part is maintained to be rich.
CONSTITUTION: In the air inlet stroke by a piston 3, an auxiliary air inlet valve 16 opens. Since the opening part 15 of an auxiliary air inlet port 14 is trained in the tangential direction to a combustion chamber 4, air through the auxiliary air inlet port 14 is taken spirally swirling along its inner wall surface into the combution chamber 4. Then, with the main air inlet valve 6 open, mixed air through the main air inlet port 5 is supplied into the central part of the combustion chamber 4. The mixed air in the central part turns to be relatively rich air-to-fuel condition. This facilitates to assure ignition by an ignition plug 9 confronting the central part of the combustion chamber 4.
