Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a helically shaped suction port for an internal combustion engine which can generate strong whirling flows in a combustion chamber of the engine during low speed running of the engine and can keep its loading efficiency from lowering during high speed high load running of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: During a suction stroke, fuel air mixture prepared in a carburettor is introduced into a combustion chamber 4 across a suction valve 5 by means of a helically shaped suction port 6. The suction port 6 consists of an entrance passage portion A having its axis slightly curved and having a rectangular cross section at its open end, and a helical portion B having its exit section 13 formed into a cylinder with its center axis coincident with a helical axis b of the helical portion B. The helical portion B has a side wall face 15 that extends outwardly beyond the exit section 13. Side wall face 15 is formed to have a gradually decreasing distance R from the axis b. The exit section 13 is designed such that its length is substantially greater than 0.225 times of its diameter. According to such construction, the suction port can generate strong whirling flows with ensuring a high loading efficiency thereof.
