Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an illumination device usable in the some way as an incandescent lamp, by connecting and arranging in an outer tube a discharge gap which makes discharge during a failure of the discharge lamp until its restarting in parallel with a high voltage discharge tube connected to a solid resistor in series. CONSTITUTION:A high voltage discharge tube 4 starts discharge with a high frequency lighting device 2 by connecting to a source. During stable lighting a bimetal switch 17 is operated by heat from the discharge tube 4 and a tungstenfilament 16 is short-circuited. When the discharge tube 4 fails, the tube 4 can not restart due to its high inner pressure, and a current flows through a discharge gap 8 and tungsten filament 7 to emit light. When the temperature and pressure in the tube 4 decreases, the discharge tube 4 starts discharge again.
