Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a discharge lamp whose filament service life is not damaged by setting a mode to a double spot mode during high output operation while switching to a single spot mode during low output mode at the time of dimming of the lamp. CONSTITUTION:A double spot mode turns switches SW1, SW2 ON during high output operation. An AC power supply e1 applies AC voltage to an end of each filament F1 or F2. Similarly, an AC power supply e2 applies voltage to the other end of each filament F1 or F2, so lighting is performed by a double spot mode. A single spot mode turns switches SW1, SW2 ON. The power supply e2 is supplied to the end of each filament F1 or F2 through condensors C1, C2 in a different way as before, so it is operated in the single spot mode. It is thus possible to prevent the service life of the filament of the discharge lamp with the optimum maintenance of filament temperature over a wide range.
