Abstract

A high intensity discharge lamp control system includes a dimming circuit 14 in which each lamp 10 is connected in series with a pair of reactive elements 42, 44, one of which may be electrically bypassed. A programmable digital microprocessor 16, synchronized with the phase of the AC supply by a zero crossing detector 18, controls the instant of firing a triac 50 which bypasses the reactor 42 thereby providing individual control of the brightness of each lamp. The microprocessor will accept multiple control inputs. Using such inputs, the system may be programmed to optimize lighting conditions at each point in an area to be illuminated while minimizing the electrical energy consumed by the lighting system. The microprocessor may be easily reprogrammed to compensate for changing lighting requirements.
