PURPOSE:To read the hard fault of a disc pack prior to reading and writing of information and enable access controlling of a head to be accomplished based on the signal thereof by recording the hard fault. CONSTITUTION:When a read command is transmitted to an interface control circuit 5 from a disc pack control circuit 4 in order to move a magnetic head including a hard fault read head (h) up to the specified position, the information setting the position of the hard fault read head (h) is transmitted from the control circuit 5 to a difference register 6. Based on this information, an access motor 2 is driven in a servo circuit 7, so that the hard fault read head (h) is moved up to the specified position of the hard fault display surface D62 of a disc pack D. The hard fault display surface D62 is read out by the instruction from the interface control circuit 5 to a read-write circuit 8.
