Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve head positioning precision by reading position information recorded on the data surface of a magnetic medium through a data head, and then controlling the energizing phase and energizing current of a stepping motor on the basis of the read position information. CONSTITUTION:On the data surface of a magnetic disk, a position information recording part for indicating a radius-directional position of the disk is provided in addition to a recording part. This position information recording part when coming to the position of a magnetic head H for reading and writing data is read, and a position error detecting circuit 3 detects the deviation of a current head position from a target track to input the position deviation to respective energizing current control circuits C1-C4 and an energizing-phase control circuit Pc. The circuit Pc detects the direction of the deviation, and consequently an energizing coil which corresponds to a track on the opposite side to a current position to the target track (n) is powered up selectively, thereby moving the head onto the target track (n).
