Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high-purity phosphoric acid, by eluting impurities present in a phosphate rock with a mineral acid of given concentration previously, and using the resultant purified rock free from the impurities.
CONSTITUTION: A pulverized phosphate rock is mixed with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, e.g. sulfuric acid of concentration ≥30wt%, to elute impurities, e.g. Mg and Na, with minimized elution of phosphorus content. The mixture is then filtered, and the resultant purified rock is used to prepare concentrated phosphoric acid by the wet process. The mineral acid used in the elution can be directly or, after addition of a fresh unused mineral acid thereto, circulated through the rock purification step for reuse. The circulating mineral acid is cooled to a temperature at which the impurities present therein become a saturated state. The deposited impurities are then separated and removed to purify the mineral acid.
