Abstract

Phosphoric acid prepared by the wet-process from sedimentary phosphate rock containing organic impurities which are soluble in phosphoric acid, is purified by passing it, after the main gypsum filtration at above 60 DEG C., through a bed or column of sufficient active carbon, e.g. at least 5%, preferably 10%, by wt. of the P2O5 content of the acid, to remove the organic impurities. A flocculating agent may be added before the acid reaches the main gypsum filtration to assist the settling of the carbon. The carbon may be regenerated by caustic soda, which may be passed in the opposite direction to the acid at a rate sufficient to dislodge but not carry away the granules. The acid treatment may be effected in two counter-current stages. Condensed alkali metal phosphates may be made by calcining orthophosphates made from this phosphoric acid.
