Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure the safety of a combustion apparatus against the shortage of oxygen and the clogging of a burner, by disposing a sensor for detecting the shortage of oxygen in the vicinity of the flame formed by a main burner in a combustion chamber, and controlling a gas valve by use of a control circuit. CONSTITUTION:A water heater shown in the drawing comprises a main burner 2 consisting of a Bunsen burner and a heat exchanging unit consisting of a water supply pipe 5 and a fin unit 4 disposed at the top of a combustion chamber 3. Further, a pilot burner 6 is disposed adjacently to the main burner 2. Here, a sensor 8 for detecting incomplete combustion is disposed on the downstream side of main flame F2 formed by the main burner 2, and the output of the sensor 8 is inputted to a control circuit 9 together with the output of another sensor 7 attached to the pilot burner 6 for detecting pilot flame F1. The control circuit 9 operates to open a gas valve 10 for maintaining combustion when flame F1 is detected by the sensor 7 after ignition of the pilot burner and to close the gas valve 10 when incomplete combustion of fuel or other problem is detected by the sensor 8.
