Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a highly safe, low irritating liquid paraffin, by separating sludge from a petroleum lubricating oil fraction, removing impurities from the separated fraction and treating the impurity-free fraction with a specific molecular sieve.
CONSTITUTION: A C15+ petroleum lubricating oil fraction is treated with a mixture of air and sulfur trioxide gas and after separation of the formed and settled acid sludge, neutralized with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide. The obtained neutral oil is treated with active alumina, active clay or the like, to remove impurities. Then, the treated oil produced is further treated with a specific molecular sieve having an average pore diameter of 5W12Å, prepared by treatment under nitrogen gas at a temperature higher than 100°C for at least 1hr, and subsequent treatment under vacuum of 100Torr. The petroleum lubricating oil fractions which are applicable are those having a kinematic viscosity at 100° F, of about 7W130cst and include spindle oil, neutral oil, etc.
