Abstract
PURPOSE: To use the surface elastic wave to control arrangement of the liquid crystal, by using the surface elastic wave element to form a substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent substrate 1 and transparent substrate 2 consisting of surface elastic wave element materials are made opposite to each other through seal material 3, and liquid crystal 4 arranged in the horizontal (or vertical) direction is sealed between them to form a liquid-crystal device. When the device receives vibration, the wave is propagated to the surface of surface elastic wave element materials to disturb arrangement of the liquid crystal, and therefore, this device is used as a mechanical vibration sensor by detecting the refractive index and the light absorptivity of the liquid crystal optically. On the other hand, in the guest host type liquid-crystal display device using upper and lower substrates 21 and 22 consisting of surface elastic wave element materials, substrates 21 and 22 are provided with intersecting finger electrodes 24 and 25 respectively, and liquid-crystal display is performed while applying the signal of approximately 1W10MHz to them, so that orientation of the liquid crystal on substrate surfaces can be arranged to prevent the mottled pattern, and the display quality can be improved.
