Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve electrolytic efficiency, and to extend the life time of an electrolytic cell, by making molten Mg float on the surface of molten salt in a collecting chamber, and closing the upper part of said chamber as tight as possible, and by providing a means for heating the floating Mg in said chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A cylindrical scooping device 10, made of firebricks or heat resistant steel and installed on the upper part of a collecting chamber 6, penetrates through a cover 9 until its lower end is immersed near the surface of the solidified layer of the floating Mg 8, or in the molten layer 8".
