Abstract

PURPOSE: To perfectly separate and recover metallic Mg from the MgCl2 bath used as a raw material by installing a tank for collecting molten metallic Mg on an electrolytic cell for Mg, and connecting the said tank to the molten pool part of the electrolytic cell by means of an overflow pipe.
CONSTITUTION: A vessel 2 for collecting molten Mg, which is made of mild steel or Cr steel tightly closed and surrounded by a heating furnace 9 is installed on an electrolytic Mg refining cell for electrolysis of the molten salt of MgCl2. An overflow pipe 5 is provided in the vessel 2, and the pipe 10 connected to the bottom end thereof is immersed in the Mg molten pool of the electrolytic cell. The inside of the vessel 2 is exhausted and evacuated to suck up the molten Mg in the molten pool part and a small amount of MgCl2 bath included therein through the pipe 10 and the pipe 5, thence a valve 11 is opened to allow the same to overflow into the vessel 2. In the vessel 2, the MgCl2 bath sedimented on the bottom by a difference in specific gravity is returned into the electrolytic cell through a discharge port 6 by operating a valve mechanism 7. The molten Mg is taken out to the outside of the vessel 2 by operating a valve 13 through a take-out pipe 12, and is fed to a casting device or the using plant.
