Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the regeneration efficiency and to reduce the regeneration time by a method wherein a specific barrier is installed in an ion-exchange resin layer and the lower layer is fixed, then regeneration is performed by upward flow.
CONSTITUTION: Multilayer-bed type cation-exchange column in a water purifier is used as an example. A weakly acidic cation-exchange resin 4 is filled in the upper layer of the exchange column 1; a strongly acidic cation-exchange resin 3 is filled in the lower layer; at the boundary is inserted a flexible barrier 2 which allows passing of liquid but not exchange resin; and the peripheral of the barrier is fixed to the cation-exchange column 1. The barrier 2 for example, has a Saran net cloth 15 inserted between two rubber plates 14 having many holes 13. Regenerating agent is guided from inlet pipe 7 into the column to regenerate the strongly acidic cation- exchange resin 3; this causes the exchange resin 3 to be swelled, increasing its own volume. Because the support 5, column wall, and the barrier 2 are fixed, the barrier is bent upward to prevent resin breakage. The regenerating agent then regenerates the upper exchange resin 4 and is discharged out of the column through the distributor 10.
