Abstract
1425889 Ion-exchange A B WASSERTECHNIK UND KUNSTSTOFFBAU GmbH 12 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 27938/73 Heading B1J A process for the treatment of and particularly the softening of, partially or fully desalting water, aqueous solutions, acids and other liquids comprising the steps of conducting the liquid being treated through a resinous-bed ion exchanger; withdrawing portions of exhausted ion exchanger resin in charges from said bed; regenerating said withdrawn resin by conducting a regenerating medium through said charge; and re-entraining said regenerated resin charge in said bed, further comprises conducting said liquid being treated with a vertical motion component from above downwardly into the inflow end of said bed and with a vertical motion component from below upwardly out of the outflow end of said bed; withdrawing said charges during treatment of said liquids in the bed from the outflow end of said bed; and reentraining said charges at the inflow end of said bed. As shown, liquid to be treated flows from inlet 40 through U-shaped bed 10 to outlet 42. From time to time resin in the last portion 18 of the bed is conveyed into regenerating chamber 28 via passages 22 and 26 under the control of three-way valve 112. Regenerant is introduced by conduit 76 and flows upwards, leaving at 70 during the subsequent wash cycle when water is introduced via conduit 72. By a further operation of the valve 112 the regenerated resin is moved to the input end of the bed. A mixed bed may be stratified and the two parts separately regenerated by suitable arrangement of pipes and valves.
