Abstract

881,015. Ion-exchange. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. Feb. 2, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5328/59. Class 46. Hard water enters resin bed 5 through inlet 1 and leaves through outlet 6. Exhausted resin leaves the bed through collecting device 9, is passed to the bottom of regenerator 13 and travels in countercurrent to brine regenerant introduced at pipe 16 by pump 15. The resin travels through the regenerating bed, passes to rinsing bed 27 via line 22 and returns to softening bed via pipe 32. The beds contain the usual resin collecting devices and screens to retain resin beads but not liquids. The movement of the cycle, which can be controlled electrically, is made in batches by shutting the appropriate valves and using the liquids, such as the hard water, rinsing water and regenerant stored in vessel 38, to displace a portion of resin. The regenerant in vessel 38 is originally displaced from the top of the bed by movement of resin from bed 5 in to regeneration bed 13. In a modification of the invention, the regenerant is stored in another vessel and is supplied to the vessel 38 by a continuously running pump.
