Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of 2,2'-alkylidene-bis(4,6-disubstituted phenol) with an esterifying agent is effected at an appropriately selected molar ratio and reaction temperature to produce the title compound used as an antioxidizing agent hardly discoloring high-molecular organic material, in high purity and yield.
CONSTITUTION: A 2,2'-alkylidene-bis(4,6-di-substituted phenol) of the formula (R1, R2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl; R3, R4 are H, alkyl) and an esterifying reagent of R5COCl (R5 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, alkenyl, heterocyclic) are mixed at a molar ratio of 1.0W1.1 and the temperature is kept to 0W30°C until the monoesterification reaches 50%. Then, the temperature is raised to 50W100°C and, when necessary, a base and a diluent such as toluene are added, thus producing the monoester of 2,2'-alkylidene-bis(4,6-disubstituted phenol).
