CONSTITUTION: This carbonitriding steel contains 0.17W0.28% C, 0.15W0.35% Si, 0.55W0.75% Mn, 0.40W0.70% Cr, >0.0005% B, <0.02% P and <0.02% S. Machine parts, etc. made of this steel are carbonitrided by adding 5W20% ammonia gas together with carburizing carrier. Since the Cr content of this steel is lower than that of a conventional carbonitriding Cr steel, no netlike Cr nitride is precipitated in carbonitriding to prevent the bending fatigue strength of the parts from lowering. Deterioration of the hardenability due to the lowered Cr content is compensated with the addition of such a very small amount of B.
