Abstract

PURPOSE: To decide easily the airtightness of a crank case connected to an external pressure source by blocking the case and by measuring an air flow rate between the case and the external pressure source.
CONSTITUTION: After engine 1 is assembled, the 1st and 2nd breather pipes 4 and 5 are blocked by caps 6 and 7, and oil filler intake 8 by cover 9 fitted to hose 10, whose connector 11 is linked to connector 14 of hose 16 connected to external pressure source 17. Next, while negative pressure from external pressure source 17 is led to crank case 21 and held constant by pressure governor valve 20, the rate of air flowing in hose 16 toward external pressure source 17 at intervals of unit time is measured by flow meter 18. Thus, the airtightness of crank case 21 can easily be decided from the measured value of flow meter 18. In addition, the airtightness of the water jacket can easily be decided in the same method as well.
