Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily manufacture an optical fiber having an arbitrary refractive index distribution by filling many glass threads different from each other in refractive index into a quartz tube by a predetermined arranging method followed by melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:For example, in the manufacture of an optical fiber having a refractive index change of graded type, glass threads 2 are densely filled into glass or quartz tube 1 so that threads 2 of highest refractive index are arranged at a central part and the refractive indexes are lowered toward the periphery. The resulting base material is then melt-spun into an optical fiber. Tube 1 is converted into the jacket of the fiber. By changing the arrangement of threads 2 different from each other in refractive index in tube 1, a glass fiber having an arbitrary refractive index distribution can be obtd. Threads 2 may be twisted in layers to make insertion into tube 1 easy.
