Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a preform rod of a wide band in long size by combining a plurality of two or more kinds of preform rods of parameters having different refractive index distributions and spinning long-sized preform rods. CONSTITUTION:All of parts 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d are preform rods manufactured by a CVD method and a VAD method. The refractive index distribution parameters alpha of the respective preform rods 1a-1d have been elucidated by the measurements of the respective refractive index distributions and the calculations based on said measurements, the alpha values of the preform rods 1a, 1c are smaller than 2 and the alpha values of the preform rods 1b, 1d are larger than 2; for example, those are alpha= 1.8 and alpha=2.2, respectively. These rods are connected by melt-stricking in the lengthwise direction in order of 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, and if this rod is spun, a long-sized preform rod is obtained.
