Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically manufacture a porous carbonaceous structure with high mechanical strength by utilizing the rehydration reaction of alumina blended in a carbonaceous structure forming composition.
CONSTITUTION: Rehydrating alumina contg. ≤about 20wt% rehydratable alumina such as ρ-alumina or amorphous alumina covered with a rehydration inhibitor such as stearic acid is used. A carbon material or a carbonizable substance such as powder of coal, petroleum coke or wood, the above-mentioned alumina, water and/ or a water-contg. substance and binder such as polyvinyl alcohol are kneaded to prepare a plastic composition. This composition is then molded into a carbonaceous structure with an extrusion molding machine, and the structure is treated with steam to rehydrate the alumina, dried, calcined at about 300W1,000°C under a nonoxidizing atmosphere, carbonized, and activated.
