Abstract

A cement or cement-like material is produced from oil shale, which, when calcined alone, gives a material not suitable for use as a cement or cement-like material, by milling to a grain size of 0.1 mm. or less and either during or after the milling mixing with an amount of clay, lime and/or like material useful in the manufacture of cement to result in a finished product which is a cement or cement-like material, wherein the mixture is then pelletized and calcined in a fluidised solids reactor at above 400 DEG C. The fluidising gas may contain free oxygen to burn the organic constituents of the shale. The cohesion of the pellets may be increased by incorporating burnt lime, cement, bentonite, or spent liquor from the sulphite process in such quantities that the pellets will disintegrate to a fine dust during calcination.
