Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase decomposition rate and decomposition ratio in the decomposition by oxydation of waste water contg. hardly decomposable org. substances with hydrogen peroxide and decomposition catalyst, by performing the treatment in the presence of activated carbon.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water 6 contg. hardly decomposable org. substances such as synthetic detergent, lignin, phenol, or formalin is led into a decomposition tanks 1, 2. Then H2O2 is added until 0.2W4 COD chemical equivalent ratio of the waste water is attained, and decomposition catalyst 9 such as ferrous sulfate, ferric sulfate etc. is added so that the ratio catalyst/H2O2 falls in a range of 0.02W0.2. After about two hrs, activated carbon 8 in a quantity 10W200% that of H2O2 is added and the waste water is stirred thereby causing decomposition. The decomposed waste water is adjusted to 6.2pH in a neutralizing tank 3, and is sent to a precipitating tank 4, where iron hydroxide formed by the reaction, and the activated carbon are precipitated. The iron hydroxide is converted to iron sulfate in a decomposition tank 5 by the addition of sulfuric acid 5', and is recycled together with the activated carbon through a tube 10 to the decomposition tanks 1, 2 and is used once again. The suppernatant liquid formed in the decomposition tank 5 is either discharged or returned to the treating apparatus.
