Abstract
Nitrified aqueous waste material containing activated sludge is mixed with aqueous waste material which has yet to be so treated. The nitrates in the aqueous material are reduced to nitrogen by anoxic denitrifying bacteria. Nitrogen is extracted from resultant denitrified liquor. This is then oxygenated and subjected to an activated sludge nitrifying treatment. Incoming aqueous waste material entering through pipe 2 is mixed with nitrified activated sludge-containing from pipe 42. The resultant mixture is subjected to anoxic treatment by denitrifying bacteria in a closed tank 10. Nitrogen formed as a result is stripped from the liquid by the action of vacuum pump 26 as the liquid is siphoned into a vessel 38 in which it is treated by aerobic nitrifying bacteria. (The liquid being siphoned is oxygenated in the lower leg 20 of the siphon). Clear liquid is run off from the vessel 38 over weir 40. Liquid containing sludge is withdrawn from the vessel 38 through pipe 42. <IMAGE>
