Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable sludge volume index to be maintained at a minimum range by so adding nitrogen sources or carbon sources into the influent water to an aerating tank that the ratio between the organic polluting substance concentration and total nitrogen concentration in said influent water is maintained within the specified ratio.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of treating the foul water containing organic substances by an activated sludge method, nitrogen sources such as ammonia, urea, etc. or organic carbon sources such as methanol, ethanol, etc. are added into the influent water so as to maintain the ratio γ between the organic polluting substance concentration and total nitrogen concentration (TN) of BOD standard in the influent water to the aerating tank at the specified value (desirably about 18W35), whereby the sludge volume index [SVI(ml/g)=(rate of sludge sedimentation of mixed solutions×104)/sludge concentration of aerating tank (mg/l)] is maintained in the minimum range.
