Abstract
1429264 Treating waste water TOKYO GAS CO Ltd 13 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 12071/73 Heading C1C A process for purifying a reducing waste water containing thiocyanate and thiosulphate ions comprises: (i) treating a sewage sludge with an ammoniacal nutritious medium and aerating the mixture to obtain an activated sludge; (ii) acclimatizing the activated sludge with a reducing waste water containing thiocyanate and thiosulphate ions by successively contacting the sludge with portions of the reducing waste water, each of which portions has a higher concentration of thiocyanate and thiosulphate ions than the portion used in the preceding step, each elevation of concentration being carried out after the sludge has become capable of decomposing thiocyanate and thiosulphate ions at the preceding concentration, step (ii) being carried out in the presence of ammoniacal nutritious medium and with aeration; (iii) contacting the acclimatized activated sludge obtained in step (ii) with the reducing waste water to be purified and with further ammoniacal nutritious medium and with non- reducing water (i.e. free from thiocyanate and thiosulphate ions) in an aeration tank and aerating the mixture; and (iv) recovering purified waste water from the aeration tank.
