Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare guanine, economically, in large quantities, by the fermentation process which comprises the culturing of a specific variant of bacteria belonging to Corybacterium genus and capable of producing and accumulating guanine, in a liquid medium.
CONSTITUTION: A variant belonging to Corynebacterium genus, resistant both to methionine and a methionine-analogue or to mycophenolic acid, and capable of producing and accumulating guanine, is cultured in a liquid medium, and the produced guanine is separated from the medium. The variant can be obtained by subjecting bacteria belonging to Corynebacterium genus, e.g. Corynebacterium equi AJ11347(FERM-P No.4968) (Ade-) to the conventional mutagenetic treatment such as ultraviolet ray irradiation, X-ray irradiation, treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N- nitrosoguanidine, etc.
